It’s a Girl!

davis baby 20 weeks Spoiler alert! We found out today we’re having a girl. Here are some pictures from the ultrasound. We are just thrilled and excited. Quite a few of our family thought we were going to have a girl, so their assumptions were confirmed today. The ultrasound was so cool. davis baby 20 weeks At first the tech was unsure of the gender since her legs were closed. She was being pretty still. Then as the tech continued to prod around and take measurements she began to kick and move around. It was so neat to feel her move and see it on the screen at the same time. The tech got a great view then and was more certain about the gender. davis baby 20 weeksEverything else looked normal, and the tech said she weighs 14 ounces today. So about 2 ounces more than a can of Coke! Now the fun stuff can begin: names, nursery, shopping!

davis baby 20 weeksI also had an appointment with my cardiologist today. My arrhythmia has been acting up. He put me back on one of my heart meds and told me to limit activity. With 50% more blood volume and the added stress on the heart, this was expected. It’ll be manageable, I’m sure.

20 Weeks – Half Way!

20 weeks I can’t believe it, but we’re at the half-way mark this weekend: 20 weeks. Here’s an update on the baby’s development:

• The baby is approx. 6 1/2 inches long from head to bottom, about 10 inches from head to heel and weighs about 14 ounces.

• A white substance called vernix caseosa coats the body to protect it from the amniotic fluid. (The sliminess also eases the journey down the birth canal. Oh, joy.)

• The uterus is at the level of my belly button now, and I’ve gained about 10 pounds. (Oh, joy.)

• I’m feeling fetal movement every day now, although it still hasn’t been strong enough for Jeff to feel yet outside my abdomen.

And here are the numbers:

There are 139 days until my due date on July 14, 2007.
I am 141 days pregnant.
I am 4.6 months pregnant.

18 Weeks

life cover This Life magazine cover (April 30, 1965) was named one of their best. It shows an 18-week old fetus in the womb photographed using an endoscope with an electronic flash by Sweden’s Linnart Nilsson. His book, A Child is Born, sold 8 million copies in the first four days after publication.

Our baby has grown to approximately 5 1/2 inches long (about the length of a large sweet potato) now at the 18-week mark. Adding two ounces in just one week, the baby weighs about seven ounces.

I had a check-up this past Thursday morning. The doctor found the heartbeat right away, which was strong and fast. He said the baby must be doing its morning calisthenics. I thought that was cute. I got to schedule the ultrasound date for the 20 week milestone (half way!). We decided to find out what we’re having. It’ll be Monday, Feb. 26 at 2:45 p.m. If the baby cooperates, we’ll find out if we’re having a boy or girl.

First Kicks!

Thursday night I had some spicy Mexican food with our family … Afterward I was emailing on the laptop on the couch while watching Emeril make homemade chocolate ice cream (mmm) … and all the sudden I felt a few little thumps on one side of my stomach. It took me by surprise. I think my laptop was smashing into my stomach … the little one was probably wanting more room 🙂 I have felt a few more flutters since then. It’s been very exciting.

17 Weeks

cara water The baby weighs about 5 ounces now and is around 5 inches long—about the size of a large onion. The skeleton, which until now was rubbery cartilage, is starting to harden to bone. His/her sense of hearing is also developing. The umbilical cord, the lifeline to the placenta, is growing stronger and thicker. This week I’m supposed to be able to start feeling the baby. It should feel like flutters but so far I don’t think I’ve been able to feel it. I have a doctor appointment Wednesday morning and then I’ll schedule the ultrasound to find out the gender! My clothes are starting to get too tight but maternity clothes are still too big. An awkward transition time!
